Review: Play Station 3 40GB

One of the newest updates to the current lineup of video game consoles is from Sony and it has a 40GB hard drive and comes with a blu-ray version of Spiderman 3. It is basically the same as the other versions of the console with a few key differences. The only two very large are, the obvious, 40GB difference in hard drive space, and the lack of a media card reader which is included with the 80GB version now. The 40GB also includes built in WiFi which is something that attract many who are debating between the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Visually, the PS3 is gorgeous, with its overall design and glossy black finish. It is by the best visually looking console on the market. Unfortunately those curves hide a beast with the weight to match. It weighs easily twice as much as the Wii and it is noticeably heavier than the Xbox 360. The reason for it being heavier than the other console is that it conceals that HUGE power brick that the Xbox 360 has within the console. There are upsides and downsides to this design. The bonus is that it makes setting up the power cable much easier because you do not have to find a location for that gargantuan power brick. The draw backs to this design is that is limits the mobility of the console. I’m not saying that you can’t move it at all, however, you may encounter difficulty when trying to move it up or down a flight of stairs.

One of the other bonuses that the PS3 offers its users is its unmatched power. The processing power behind the PS3 enables developers to make the the most graphically intensive games ever seen…

…but, most developers have yet to harness this awesome power, so the games that are out right now are as good as any game on the Xbox 360. Eventually(however far away “eventually” may be”) the PS3 games will have graphics that the Xbox 360 cannot even come close to. When you compare the PS3 to the Wii, the victor is pretty clear cut. If you want graphics get the PS3 but if you actually want to have fun when playing get a Wii. The motion on the PS3 is very weak and completely inadquate when compared the Wii. The PS3’s motion is very limited, and I have found it to be very unresponsive so if you are using it to dive out of the way of something you probably won’t.

As a blu-ray player the PS3 is unmatched, I mean come on. You can buy a conventional blu-ray player for a similar price and you can’t play any games or you can get the PS3, watch blu-ray movies, and play video games. Oh and you also get a web browser and all around media center.

Overall the PS3 is a descent console, although I don’t love it, I’m hoping that a few more blockbuster titles come along that can utilize the full potential of the PS3.
