Review: Crysis

In Crytek’s latest first person shooter, the first in this trilogy, you play as a futuristic U.S. Marine sent to an island in the south China sea to discover the reason for sealing of the island. The game opens with an amazing scene where you play as the marine jumping out of a plane over the island. You control the character as you free fall into the ocean below.

You proceed to utilize various futuristic weaponry to take out the North Korean forces that get in your way. You are also able to drive all of the vehicles that you encounter in the game and it includes surprisingly good driving physics. The truly unique feature in this game is your armor, which is something that can only be seen through a video game. It allows you to choose one of several “upgrades” for your armor such as super strength, speed, and a variety of other upgrades. The amazing thing about this is that it allows you to “mod” your suit with just a simple click of your mouse, no need to navigate through different menus after first pausing the game. Crytek also used this interface to allow you to “mod” your weapon with silencers, laser sights, and various other attachments and upgrades.

Crytek really pulled out all the stops when they were developing this game, making it one of the few games to utilize Microsoft’s DirectX 10. I am currently running this game on a computer with an Athalon X2 4600 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM, and an nVidia 8800 GT, however I have run this on a computer with a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz, 1 GB RAM, and an nVidia 6800. On this other computer it ran without any problems on the default settings, the only draw back being that some of the cut scenes lag a bit. Crysis will hopefully be the first of many games that will be DirectX 10 games.

Overall Crysis is an amazing game, the game play and graphics are all amazing. Especially if you have a DirectX 10 card, I recommend getting this game. Even you have a card that would force you to lower the game’s settings it is still a terrific game.
